WORKS

Charlevoix Pier Lighthouse

This 1948 lighthouse, with its red light, continues to serve as an active aid to navigation. Michelle Smay, while with SmithGroup, prepared a Historic Structure Report for the Charlevoix Historical Society. This Historic Structure Report determined the scope of work involved with its ownership, restoration and anticipated maintenance.

Smay Trombley Architecture provided architectural services, including comprehensive bid documents and construction oversight for construction that was implemented in three phases from 2009 through 2013. This work focused on the reduction of moisture accumulation within the lighthouse, and exterior and interior repairs and painting.

Grosse Ile North Channel
Front Range Light

Built in 1906, the Grosse Ile North Channel Front Range Light is the island’s only remaining lighthouse. One of many range lights that once served commerce traffic along the Detroit River and its channels, the light is today owned by Grosse Ile Township.

Smay Trombley Architecture worked with the township and the Grosse Ile Historical Society to undertake an extensive rehabilitation of the lighthouse, including window repairs, lantern glass replacement, upper deck repairs, repainting and restoration of the beautiful interior shellaced woodwork.

As an important Great Lakes’ shipping port, St. Joseph has the distinction of being the site of the first lighthouse along Lake Michigan’s Michigan shoreline. The current structures were constructed on the city’s north pier in 1907 and comprise the Outer Light, the Inner Light and integral Fog Signal Building and two elevated catwalks. In 2008, Smay Trombley Architecture prepared a comprehensive Condition Assessment Report of the structures for the City of St. Joseph.

Smay Trombley Architecture is currently preparing a Historic Structure Report and Phase 1 construction documents for the rehabilitation of the lights and elevated catwalks.
